Nutritional contributors to cardiovascular disease in the elderly

Despite a reduction in the number of cardiovascular-related deaths, cardiovascular disease remains the major contributing factor to morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. Hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity, and smoking are the primary contributing risks to cardiovascular disease. It's recent decline is mainly due to a variety of lifestyle changes, including better dietary habits which more closely resemble the current dietary guidelines, increased physical activity, and a decreased popularity of smoking. Low fat diets, including reduced consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol have also improved the outlook in the prevention of this disease.(lsp)
