Oestrogens and vitamin B6--actions and interactions

A comprehensive technical review summarizes and discusses available evidence concerning: (1) the assessment of vitamin B6 nutritional status; (2) whether oral contraceptives and other estrogens cause vitamin B6 deficiency; (3) possible mechanisms by which high doses of vitamin B6 overcome estrogen-related disorders; and (4) the apparent major role of victim B6 in steroid hormone action at the nuclear level. It is pointed out that, while estrogens may not affect vitamin B6 metabolism, evidence indicates that its active metabolite (pyridoxal phosphate) is a cofactor in the action of estrogens and other steroid hormones. It also is concluded that a moderate vitamin B6 deficiency can result in end-organ sensitivity to both estrogens and androgens.
