Conceptual problems in nutrition education in Western Nigeria

A pilot survey was conducted to identify factors affecting infant feeding practices in rural Western Nigeria. The study served to highlight intercultural perceptual problem areas. The survey results revealed widespread use of imported, high-cost carbohydrate foods and a substantial resistance to the use of local healthful items for young infants. A common impression was that excess food was bad for the child. Further, health education staff members were not highly regarded presenting a barrier to the acceptance of their community educational efforts. Several recommendations were made on the basis of these findings, including: selective control of food and nutrition advertising; reviewed staff orientation and training; and the initiation of a campaign to re-establish breastfeeding as the conventional infant feeding practice.
