The effect of foliar fertilisation on the growth and yield of lowbush blueberry in Estonia

Blueberries respond differently to fertiliser applications than other crop plants. In the opencast peat pits the growing substrate had a very low nutrition content, therefore the use of fertilisers is needful. In a production field of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.), the influence of foliar fertiliser Ca(NO3)2 and two complex fertilisers (12% P, 18% K and 10% N, 20% P, 20% K) on growth and yield were investigated. Both the complex fertilisers were used at the rate of 300 kg ha-1, the foliar fertiliser was applied at the rate of 0.5% x 400 L ha-1. In early spring (end of April) the complex soil fertilisers were applied into the soil and the spray of foliar fertiliser was applied before flowering (end of May). The experiment was carried out during two years (1999, 2000) in opencast peat pits on Fibri-Dystric Histosol in South-Estonia. The result showed that foliar fertiliser concentration higher than 0.5% in spray solution caused leaf damages. The average yield of lowbush blueberry was 62…148 g per plant in the first crop year and 354…856 g in the second crop year. The weight of fruit was 0.3…0.5 g in 1999 and 0.5…0.6 g in 2000. Fruit’s weight and yield were the highest when foliar fertilizer was used with soli complex fertilizer.
