Bone mineral content in children 1 to 6 years of age--detectable sex differences after 4 years of age

A longitudinal cross-sectional study of 89 healthy 1-6 year-old children tested the hypothesis that bone mineral content (BMC) would increase with age, would be slower for females than males, and would not be influenced by prior breast- vs. formula-feeding. The results confirmed that: (1) BMC increased with age; (2) BMC increases were lower in female children; and (3) that breast-feeding was not related to BMC, even after adjusting for time since weaning. Analyses for BMC were carried out by direct photon absorptiometry at the one-third distal radius site.(wz)
