Soil Resource Information and Alternative Crop Planning for Cauvery Delta Region of Tiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu

Cauvery delta zone is the paddy granary of Tamil Nadu. Tiruvarur is one among the districts that contribute major share of paddy and pulse production. Visual interpretation of Geocoded FCCs IRS-1D PANS merged LISS III satellite data (1:50,000 scale) recognized twenty-two image interpretation units (IIUs) in the two major landforms viz. nearly level plain and very gently sloping. Based on the IIUs a semi-detailed soil survey was carried out and the soils were characterized with respect to landform. Sixteen representative pedons representing entire Tiruvarur district in Tamil Nadu were characterized, classified and assessed for their nutrient content and suitability for different crops. The soils were deep to very deep, light yellowish brown to dark red, excessive to poorly drained, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, low in organic carbon and low to high in cation exchange capacity with wide textural variations. Soils were low in available nitrogen, medium in available phosphorus and medium to high in available potassium. The soil-site constraints are soil reaction, abrupt textural variation in soil profiles, low organic carbon and low fertility. There is an immediate need to alleviate the problem of the organic matter content of these soils, which is responsible for poor soil health. On the basis of the major soil constraints, suitable land use plan for the Tiruvarur district was suggested for their sustainable management.
