Experimental model for in vivo determination of dietary fibre and its effect on the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine

An experimental model for the determination of dietary fiber in wheat bran was used to examine gastrointestinal hydrolysis of wheat bran fiber and the effect of wheat bran on nutrient losses in ileostomy patients. The model calculated the dietary fiber in bran as the increase in polysaccharides and lignin of ileostomy contents after consumption of bran. Addition of 16 g of bran to the daily diet increased wet and dry weight of ileostomy contents. No significant differences in level of nitrogen, starch or potassium with the bran diet were observed; however, sodium excretion increased with bran intake. This finding suggests that amylases and proteases are not inactivated by bran. (Increased amounts of fecal nitrogen following fiber supplementation reported in other studies may be produced in the large bowel.) Little digestion of bran hemicellulose and cellulose occurred in stomach and small bowel, as 75-100% of the fiber components of bran were recovered; bran lignin also appeared to pass intact through the small intestine. This in vitro method of measuring dietary fiber agreed well with analytical determinations.
