The development of earth-abundant, cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for the production of hydrogen. Structural transitions and generation of deficiencies are prominent ways of altering the d-band center, leading to improved HER performance. Ni₂P–SnP heterostructures are being reported for the first time for enhanced electrochemical HER. Potential electrochemical cycling up to 100 cycles led to amplified HER activity, demonstrating an onset potential of only 20 mV and η₁₀ as low as only 69 mV. The enhancement in catalytic activity is attributed to selective disruption of the Ni₂P phase owing to Ni dissolution.
