Biodegradation of Substrates during Mushroom Growth and Possibility of Its Recycling

Pleurotus sajor-caju, an oyster mushroom and potential converter of lignocellulosic agro wastes into proteins was grown on rice straw and bamboo wastes alone and in blended forms, viz., rice straw (RS), bamboo waste (BW), RS + BW @ 50:50, RS + BW @ 75:25 and RS + BW @ 25:75 to investigate the efficiency of the substrates and cellulolytic and ligninolytic activity of the mushroom. The yield and biological efficiency of the mushroom was highest in RS blended with BW @ 75:25 while the highest total soluble protein content was found in fruits obtained from RS alone. Because of higher lignin content, cellulolytic activity was found lowest in BW. The potentiality of P. sajor-caju to degrade cellulose and lignin was reflected on the changes in carbon and nitrogen contents of the substrates. Maximum reduction in organic carbon content occurred within 14 days of cropping and there was a gradual increase in the nitrogen content of the substrates during the growth resulting in the lowering of C:N ratio in the substrates. Spent mushroom substrates were used as organic manure to study its effect on the yield and different yield attributing characters in French bean variety ‘Contender’.
