Effect of black pepper & asafoetida on the DNA content of gastric aspirates

Extract: The effect of intragastric infusion of black pepper powder in doses of 0.2, 0.4 g/h and asafoetida in doses of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 g/h on different days in human volunteers was studied by measuring the DNA contents of gastric aspirates. The mean increase in the DNA content of gastric aspirates as compared to the basal value for black pepper at 0.2 g/h was 1.00; at 0.4 g/h was 6.30; in the case of asafoetida, the values at 0.1 g/h were 1.18, at 0.2 g/h 4.15 and 0.4 g/h 9.13. The results showed that black pepper does not damage the human gastric mucosa, wheras asafoedits does, as assessed by its effect on the rate of exfoliation of the surface epithelial cells of human gastric mucosa.
