SynopsisField experiments were initiated in 1960 in the states of Georgia, South Carolina, Iowa and Minnesota to evaluate methods of reducing uptake of Sr⁹⁰ fallout by crops. Significant reductions in Sr⁸⁰ content in corn and soybean grain were obtained by deep placement but not by irrigation. Calcium treatments reduced Sr⁹⁰ in both grains in Georgia, and potassium reduced Sr⁹⁰ in corn grain in Minnesota. The maximum reduction observed was about 50%.
