The 'greening effect': implications for consumer food choices

A surge of the environmental movement, known as "green consumerism" or "food ecology," the relationship between food and the environment, is becoming a factor in food choices. All aspects of food production, processing, handling, distribution and marketing are being impacted. Never before were there so many choices. Voluntary changes prompted by social, health and environmental activists are occurring without legislative action or reform. Newly introduced food products show a preponderance of health and/or environmentally compatible characteristics and a willingness of consumers to pay the price differences Potential changes in food packaging, a major contributor to the solid waste stream, involve package types, recyclability, degradability, edibility, weight and design. All are under review with emphasis on the three "R's": Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
