Selenium nutriture in total parenteral nutrition: Intake levels
1980
Smith, Jack L. | Goos, Susan M.
Selenium nutriture in patients on long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was assessed for the purpose of defining human needs and utilization of trace elements. A large number of solutions from various manufacturers were analyzed; the major source of selenium was the dextrose solutions but Se content may be related to the manufacturing process rather than to dextrose concentration. Records of 4 patients on different TPN formulas suggested that selenium intake would be adequate; gradually declining Se levels may indicate difficulty in absorption by the body.
