1. Insect cell culture may be employed for producing many recombinant protein products as well as viral insecticides. 2. The sensitivity of the cells to aeration damage, however, has made it difficult to scale-up the culture system. 3. This problem may be reduced or even eliminated through the use of media additives, such as serum and neutral polymers. 4. In this paper we present a brief review on recent studies which have increased our understanding of the mechanisms of cell damage and the protective effects of media additives in agitated and aerated culture systems.
