The endogenous vitamin D content of bovine milk: influence of season
1994
Kurmann, A. | Indyk, H.
A liquid chromatographic technique has been developed to estimate cholecalciferol at endogenous levels, in the milk of cows exclusively and extensively grazed on pasture. The temporal variation in vitamin D content ranges between 0.06 (winter) and 0.23 iu/g fat (summer) and, by comparison with the radically different husbandry practices of the northern hemisphere, this study has revealed and confirmed the dominant influence of solar radiation on the levels of this secosteroid secreted in the milk of lactating animals.
