Impact of Pulverization, Pretreatment and pH Regulation on Microbial Extraction of Metals from Waste Mobile Phone Printed Circuit Boards

The aim of the presented work was to check the effect of pulverization and pre-treatment of the waste mobile printed circuit boards (MPCBs) on bioleaching of copper, zinc and nickel. In the present study, untreated, pre-treated, pulverized and non-pulverized MPCBs were used in the leaching process. The preserved acidophilic iron oxidizer Leptospirillum-dominated consortium was activated and it was used for the bioleaching process. Unpulverized MPCB showed higher extraction of copper and nickel while higher zinc extraction was recorded with pulverized MPCBs. The alkali pre-treatment showed a positive effect on the extraction of copper and zinc while nickel showed higher extraction when MPCB was untreated. Moreover, when the pH of the medium was monitored to 2.0, it showed 1.45 times higher extraction of copper as compared to the system where pH was not adjusted to 2.0 throughout the experiment. The overall optimization of the process showed 27, 33 and 186 fold increase in copper, zinc and nickel extraction. As copper is major metal in any e-waste unpulverized and pre-treatment should be recommended process for the bioleaching.
