Micropropagation and Bioaugmentation of Picroside I in Leaves of In Vitro Cultured Plants of Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle ex Benth

Medicinal importance of Picrorhiza kurrooa is known to be due to its tuberous roots containing glycosides, viz. Picroside I (P-I), Picroside II (P-II), Kutkoside etc. This has lead to impulsive uprooting of the plant from the wild consequently resulting in its endangered status. The present study is an attempt to micropropagate the plant through callus mediated organogenesis, and to estimate the content of P-I in different in vitro grown developmental stages. Further, HPLC analysis of various in vitro cultured morphogenetic stages showed that the leaf explants have higher P-I content as compared to the root explants.
