Magnesium decreases the symptoms of leaf scald on rice leaves

Considering the importance of magnesium (Mg) in plant metabolism and the lack of information regarding the effect of this macronutrient on the rice-Monographella albescens interaction, the present study aimed to investigate whether an increase on the foliar concentration of Mg could decrease the symptoms of leaf scald on rice leaves. Rice plants were grown in nutrient solution supplied with 0.5 and 1.5 mM of Mg. The increased foliar Mg concentration for plants supplied with 1.5 mM of Mg contributed to reduce the length of leaf scald lesions in association with a lower concentration of malondialdehyde. The concentrations of total soluble phenolics and the activities of polyphenoloxidases, peroxidases, phenylalanine ammonia-lyases and lipoxygenases, but not those of chitinases and β-1,3-glucanases, were higher on the leaves of plants supplied with 1.5 mM Mg during the infection process of M. albescens. An increase on foliar Mg concentration contributed to reduce the symptoms of leaf scald mainly through the potentiation of the activities of defense enzymes.
