Selected data and findings from a forthcoming report based on the Health and Nutrition Examination (HANES) and Health Examination Survey (HES) are presented. Both methods used for cholesterol determination are described. Differences in mean levels for men and women, and by age and sex are reported, and illustrated with charts. The data is summarized, and it is concluded that both laboratory methods show positive, correctable biases relative to a common reference method. The reference method may be presumed to be stable, but a shift in accuracy may have occurred. Many statistics are included.
