Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activity of the Essential Oil from the Aerial Parts of Torilis japonica

The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from dried aerial parts of Torilis japonica was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and 31 compounds were identified. The oil was dominated by β-eudesmene (22.87 %), α-selinene (12.94 %), eudesm-7(11)-en-4-ol (10.42 %) and β-elemene (8.22 %), which were all sesquiterpenes. The antibacterial activity of the oil was tested against the food spoilage bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus subtilis , Listeria monocytogenes , Escherichia coli , Shigella dysenteriae , Bibrio parahemolyticus and Salmonella typhimurium . The results showed that the extracted oil was effective against S. typhimurium , B. subtilis and L. monocytogenes using the agar disk diffusion method and B. subtilis was the most sensitive strain with the minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.16 mg/ml by the broth microdilution bioassay.
