Formation of immiscible oil droplets during chemigation. I. In-line dispersion

Factors that influenced the immiscible oil droplet size distribution within a simulated chemigation line were evaluated. Isokinetic sampling in the chemigation water line was conducted to measure droplet size distribution of oil (the dispersed phase) using a Brinkmann Particle Size Analyzer system. The velocity of water flow (the continuous phase) at the injection port and injection port configuration were the main factors evaluated in this study. Velocity of the continuous phase significantly influenced the droplet size distribution of the dispersed phase. The effect of injection port configuration on oil droplet size distribution was less at low velocity, but was of greater significance at high velocity. A unimodal droplet size distribution, with a narrow span and a minimum number of small droplets, was selected for inclusion in future nozzle dispersion tests. A desirable in-line droplet size distribution was produced at a water flow velocity of 0.91 m/s with a 1.59 mm I.D. injection port. The droplet size distribution had a volume median diameter of 196 micrometers and a number median diameter of 31 micrometers.
