A brief literature review deals with specific effects of fluoride (F) on human health, with particular regard to: the specific aspects of protection and protective mechanisms of F against dental caries incidence and etiology; the clinical tolerance of F and its benefits in osteoporosis prevention; and epidemiological data that associate high F levels in drinking water with lower cardiovascular disease prevalence. Fluoride treatment of osteoporosis has been shown to result in tangible improvement, but the mechanism for this is not well understood, and not all patients can indefinitely tolerate F treatment. Further epidemiological studies are needed to further examine the possible benefits of optimal water fluoridation on the prevalence of heart disease and osteoporosis. (wz)
