Time for tapioca, 1970 to 1980: European demand and world supply of dried cassava

Extract: International trade of dried cassava increased more than 400 percent in the 1970s; the European Community accounted for all imports and Thailand all export growth. European agricultural policy changes shifted import demand for dried cassava outward and pushed world cassava prices up. Import growth engendered pressure for policy changes by groups adversely affected, and future growth has become less likely. Although Indonesia was the largest Southeast Asian cassava producer in the 1960s, only Thai exports responded to the increased world price. The divergent responses arose from differences in availability of uncultivated land, development of transport, domestic demand, and government policies.
