Verticillium dahliae reduces plant growth, constitutively induces antioxidant metabolism and gene expression in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

The eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) frequently faces challenges from pathogen Verticillium dahliae Kleb., but mechanisms of eggplant response to the pathogen attack are unclear. Therefore, in this study, the physiological mechanism and underlying regulatory networks were analysed in leaves of eggplant plant infected by V. dahliae. After inoculation with V. dahliae at the 3-leaf stage of eggplant seedlings, significant suppression of plant growth was recorded, and activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase increased. Transcriptome analysis revealed that the number of differentially expressed genes was 1,529, 2,287, and 9085 at 1, 7 and 13 days after inoculation, respectively. The results by quantitative real time PCR further confirmed that four defence-related genes were generally upregulated after infection. These findings provide new insights into the eggplant defence response to the pathogen and may facilitate the rapid discovery and utilization of potential defence-related genes.
