Economic efficiency on different breeds of poultry birds under backyard management system in Dimapur district of Nagaland

Nagaland has a vast potentiality for the development of poultry farming since majority of its population are non vegetarian The present study is a reflection of the present status of poultry farming in Dimapur district of Nagaland, which indicates that lot more is to be done for occupying a parallel position with the progress made in other state of the country. The present study reveals that the broiler per bird average production of meat was worked out to be 1.47 kilograms and it was recorded 1.70 kilograms on kuroiler bird. In the broiler cost A₁ per bird was Rs. 92.34/-, while in the kuroiler households it was Rs. 105.38/-. Cost A₂ and Cost C per bird in the broiler and kuroiler households was Rs. 92.64/-and Rs. 106.58/-, and Rs. 94.83/-and Rs. 110.00/-respectively. The gross income, household business income, family labour income, income over variable cost and net income per cycle per bird in the broiler and kuroiler households was worked out to be Rs. 128.02/-and Rs. 174.22/-, Rs. 35.68/-and Rs. 68.84/-, Rs. 33.88/-and Rs. 66.04/-, Rs. 35.10/-and Rs. 67.22/-and Rs. 33.19/-and Rs. 64.22/-, respectively. The benefit cost ratio based on the total cost in the broiler and kuroiler households was 1.35 and 1.58 respectively. Due to the lack of government incentives, entrepreneurship and marketing facilities has brought about stagnation in poultry enterprise.
