Origin of high methionine content in sugary 1 corn endosperm

Data are presented showing that, compared with those of their normal analogues, the endosperms of the dent maize inbreds B37 and Oh43, which both possess the gene su1, contain (1) 21 and 36% more methionine, respectively, resulting from an increase in the methionine content of alcohol-soluble reduced glutelin, (2) a greater proportion of alcohol-insoluble and salt-soluble reduced glutelins and a smaller proportion of zein and (3) 32 and 56% more lysine, respectively. The sweet corn inbred Commander, which also contains su1, did not contain more alcohol-soluble reduced glutelin or less zein than B37 and Oh43, suggesting that the change in endosperm protein distribution is influenced by the background into which su1 is introduced.<new para>ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:<new para>Endosperm proteins of 2 sugary-1 maize inbred lines contained 21 and 36% more methionine than did the protein of their normal counterparts. These differences were associated with a 32 and 56% increase in lysine content, increased content of glutelin proteins and a reduction of zein content compared with those in normal endosperm.
