Correlation between various biochemical constituents and fruit yield in lycopene rich genotypes of Tomato

In the present study, a set of twenty-five genotypes of tomato (PLRT-1 to PLRT-25) along with Punjab Ratta (check) were evaluated for biochemical constituents viz. lycopene, carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, acidity, tomatine and yield per plant. Lycopene content and carotene content varied between 2.40 to 8.06 mg 100 g⁻¹ FW and the carotene content ranged from 1.63 to 7.25 mg 100 g⁻¹ FW. The variety, PLRT-8 recorded significantly higher vitamin C content (29.72 mg 100 ml⁻¹ FW) while genotype PLRT- 11 recorded the maximum acidity (0.80 mg 100 ml⁻¹ FW). The vitamin A and tomatine content ranged from 0.81-2.71 mg 100 g-1 FW and 14.11-53.02 mg 100 g⁻¹ DW, respectively. The highest yield (2.61 kg per plant) was observed in PLRT-10. Pearson correlation analysis (2-tailed) performed gave a total of 11 significant correlations at 5% and 1% level of significance. Correlation data even indicated that yield per plant was not correlated with any biochemical trait. Overall, this information will be useful to develop breeding programs aiming to improve combination of important traits in new tomato cultivars.
