This review evaluates data on the interactions between: 1) liver diseases (including changes in liver function and morphology in malnutrition; 2) altered hepatic handling of xenobiotics; 3) the relationship between liver and other systems such as the gut and immune system; 4) genetic variability in susceptibility to the effects of suboptimal nutrition; and 5) liver disease as a cause of malnutrition. Additional specific topics include: 1) fatty liver in kwashiorkor (fatty acids, impaired beta-oxidation, impaired lipoprotein export, toxic damage to the cell and oxidative stress caused by aflatoxin, gut-derived toxins and bowel wall permeability), 2) liver damage from excess energy intake (steato-hepatitis in obesity, liver damage following intestinal bypass, energy restriction and longevity and xenobiotics, 3) oncogenesis, and 4) specific dietary excess (vitamin A, vitamin E, and copper.)
