Naso-gastric tube-feeding. A survey to investigate current practices and attitudes of dietitians

Questionnaires completed by 72 registered British dietitians revealed information on current practices in naso-gastric tube-feeding of hospitalized patients and the attitudes of the dietitians toward this form of patient support. In a majority of hospitals, home-made formulas were used at least half the time, and were usually prepared by trained diet cooks; cost, flexibility, and patient tolerance were cited as primary assets. Administration techniques used were gravity, clinifeeding or bolus-feeding. The complication most frequently encountered was diarrhea, both from commercial and home-made types of feed. Testing for bacterial count was sporadic at best. Most hospitals (95%) monitored at least some parameters of patients' nutritional status. Most dietitians felt that naso-gastric and parenteral feeding should not become a specialization.
