Dieting and exercise: Why they go hand in hand
1984
Edwards, Ted L. Jr | Lau, Barbara
The synergistic effects of vigorous activity and dieting are discussed. Within a 24 hour period physically active people burn more fat than sedentary people. By increasing physical activity one can build muscle mass and burn fat faster. Enough activity must be generated to cause the body to mobilize glycogen (a carbohydrate stored in liver and muscle cells) stores. Once glycogen stores are used the body burns fat for energy. Activity develops muscle mass which requires more calories than fat tissue for maintenance. (kbc)
