Low iron intakes among young women in Britain
1985
Barber, Sigrid A. | Bull, Nicola L. | Buss, D.H.
A dietary intake survey of over 1000 young British women, aged 15-25 years, revealed that the subjects generally had iron (Fe) intakes well below the RDA. This was particularly the case for women who were "on a diet" or who were "watching their weight". These low Fe intakes were attributed to the use of low Fe diets and energy resricted diets. Research is needed to assess whether the current RDA for Fe for women of this age group is too high and whether the observed sub-RDA levels present a risk. (wz)
