Effect of magnesium and manganese sprays on SPAD readings and chlorophyll content of chlorotic leaves of jackfruit

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of foliar sprays of magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) on the greenness and chlorophyll content of jackfruit (Arthocarpus heterophyllua Lam.) leaves exhibiting interveinal chlorosis. A SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter was used to measure leaf green color. Biweekly foliar applications of Mg and Mn were applied separately to chlorotic 2-year-old jackfruit trees for 13 weeks. Leaf greenness was measured every two weeks in leaves developed after the first spraying, starting three weeks after the first spray. Linear regression was used to determine the relationships of SPAD values to leaf chlorophyll contents using pooled data obtained from the Mg and Mg treatments. Foliar application of either Mg or Mn solutions significantly increased the leaf SPAD values only when the leaves were 3 weeks old. There was no significant difference between treatments at subsequent leaf sampling times. Strong linear correlations were obtained between SPAD values and chlorophyll contents: For total chlorophyll: R2 = 0.8006 for total chlorophyll; R2 = 0.7506 for chlorophyll a; and R2 = 0.6491 for chlorophyll b. Thus, the SPAD-502 was a good tool to evaluate the chlorophyll contents of jackfruit leaf.
