This exploratory study of 80 women examined the relationships among scales of emotional eating, external eating, and restrained eating with their body mass index (BMI), as well as the interrelationships among these three eating behavior components. The relationships among the three eating behavior scales and 19 personality scales were examined and the differences between obese and latent obese women with respect to eating behavior and personality were investigated. There was a significant relationship between BMI and both emotional eating and external eating. In addition, emotional eating had the clearest relationship with a number of personality traits.(lsp)
