Development of food sufficiency questions for the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

For the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), questionnaires were adapted and tested to assess food sufficiency at the household and individual levels. Questionnaires were evaluated in the National Laboratory for Collaborative Research in Cognition and Survey Measurement at the National Center for Health Statistics and pilot tested in four locations in the United States. At the household level, questions are asked about perceived food sufficiency, the number of days per month on which there is no food or money to buy food, and reasons for such a lack of food. At the individual level, seven specific questions about the frequency of and reasons for going without food are asked, in conjunction with a detailed 24-hour dietary recall. The NHANES III questions provide a unique opportunity in a national survey to relate food sufficiency to measurements of nutritional and health status. The questions can also be used by state and local surveys to compare their populations with national data.
