In order to find out the prealence and incidence of the Sclerotium rolfsij causing collar rot in chickpea, an extensive survey was conducted during the year, 2005-06 and 2006-07 in some districts viz. Hamirpur, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Mahoba,Urai of Bundelkhand region Uttar Pradesh. Collar rot is often seen in theseedling stage, particularly under wet soil conditions. The incidence of disease used to be more at higher soil moisture (30%) and temperature (30°C) at sowing time. The pathogen was readily isolated on 2% potato dextrose agar using recommended technique, In order to identify the isolated pathogen, The morphological and dultural characteristics were observed by the naked eyes and with the help of microscope on potato dextrose agar medium. Colonies were fast growing usually within seven days of inoculation. Mycelium were hyaline, highly branched, slender with thin wall and Clamp connection at the septum. Highly septates. The basidia are thin walled, hyaline. Broadly cla ate and measure 14.3 -16.0 x 5.2 - 6.7 μm in size , Each basidium gave rise to 2-4 devergent sterignata 5.2 – 6.5 m long which are hyaline, pyriform and 4.7 – 5.6 x 3.2 m in size. The sckeritia were spherical similar to mustard seed and light brown initially but change to dark brown with time. The optimum temperature for sclerotial production was excellent at 25°C, good at 30°C – 20°C, fair at 15°C , no sclerotial production was noticed at 5°C . The optimum pH for its growth was 6.0 followed by 5.0 and 8.5, lowest growth was recorded at pH 2.0 and good sclerotial production was at 5.0
