Scheidt, R.J. | Norris-Baker, C.
The goal of this special issue on rural aging is to present issues of relevance to the psychological, social, and physical well-being of older Americans who reside in rural environments, particularly those living in small rurual communities experiencing acute and chronic changes associated with the restructuring of the rural economy. In this introductory article, we present a transactional approach to environmental stress which we use to identify and taxonomize multi-level positive and negative outcomes experienced by elderly residents of small, economically-endangered towns. We use this contextual taxonomy to offer an overview of these possible outcomes, and discuss their relevance for rural community psychologists and other professionals concerned with the mental health of rural elderly individuals. The invited articles in this special issue, each dealing with issues described by this framework, are introduced.
