Evaluation of various substrates for the mass multiplication of Trichoderma spp

Four biocontrol isolates of Trichoderma spp. isolated from okra rhizosphere soil having potential against Rhizotonia solani causing damping off were evaluated for mass multiplication on various solid substrates. Eleven locally available low cost substrates viz., grains of wheat, sorghum, barley, paddy and maize along with wheat straw, paddy straw, maize shelled cob, FYM, cow dung and okra stem were evaluated for the linear mycelial growth (mm), growth rate (mm/day) and sporulation (spore/g) of potential bioagents. Sorghum grains supported the maximum growth of Trichoderma spp. in open-ended tube followed by paddy or barley grains whereas, among agro by-products, paddy straw showed highest growth followed by wheat straw after 12 days of incubation. To improve growth and sporulation of bioagents on agro by-products viz., paddy straw, cow dung and FYM were supplemented with different carbon sources viz., glucose, jaggery and sucrose (each @ 1.0% and 5.0%) for mass multiplication of these potential Trichoderma isolates. Highest linear mycelial growth (170.7 mm) was recorded on paddy straw when amended with 5.0% sucrose by Trichoderma sp.-2 isolate after 7 days of incubation.
