Influence of Imazapic Herbicide Simulated Carryover on Cotton Growth, Yields, and Lint Quality

Herbicide carryover may influence plant growth and yields of subsequent crops. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate a simulated carryover of imazapic (Cadre 70 DG) application on cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.) growth, yields, and lint quality in 2005 and 2006. Imazapic was applied preemergence at 0.001, 0.002, 0.004, 0.008, 0.016, 0.032, and 0.063 lb ai/acre. High rates of imazapic at 0.032 and 0.063 lb/acre reduced lint cotton yields (700 and 230 lb/acre, respectively) compared to the non-treated control (1100 lb/acre). With each 0.01 lb ai/acre of imazapic application, lint yields were reduced by 138 lb/acre. In one out of two years, manufacturer's suggested use rates reduced the plant stand and height, node number, plant index, boll number per plant, and lint micronaire compared to control. Averaged across years, lint length, staple, and uniformity were also affected by imazapic application to cotton. This study indicates that cotton stand, growth, yield, and quality can be affected by imazapic. Higher precipitation following planting may contribute to early activation of imazapic and therefore stand reductions. However, late activation of imazapic during cotton vegetation may reduce plant height and node number, plant index, and boll number per plant.
