Serious side-effects (hypertensive crisis, headaches, tachycardia, fatal intracranial hemorrhage) can result when patients taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors eat foods that contain significant amounts of pressor amines (especially, tyramine), since MAO normally detoxifies these amines. Specific dietary avoidances (e.g., yeast concentrates, soy sauce) are discussed, noting the non-uniformity of food restrictions. Guidelines for such food restrictions are included.(wz)
