Effect of fertilizing tung trees with potash and other materials on the exchangeable cation content of red bay fine sandy loam

Fertilization of tung trees growing on Red Bay fine sandy loam with 2.94 and 5.88 pounds per tree of K2O, whether as muriate or sulfate, over a 4-year period produced significant increases in exchangeable potassium to depths of 12 and 18 inches, respectively. Vetch mulch did not increase the soil potassium. Crotalaria mulch increased the soil potassium in in the 6- to 12-inch and the 12- to 18-inch depths but not in the surface layer. No consistent differences were noted between muriate and sulfate of potash as to their effect on soil potassium. Increasing the nitrogen applied as fertilizer decreased the potassium content of the tung leaves. The potassium content of the leaves was found to increase significantly with the quantity of potash applied as fertilizer and with the quantity of exchangeable potassium remaining in the soil at all depths to 18 inches.
