Correlation of Soil Plasticity with Amorphous Clay Constituents

The percentage of amorphous constituents removed from the clay size fraction of western Oregon soils by kinetic dissolution was significantly correlated with soil plasticity. Soil plasticity was identified by the plasticity angle which was defined by the angle, relative to the ‘A’ line intercept, where the Atterberg limits of air-dried soil occurred on the Casagrande plasticity chart. An exponential correlation between the plasticity angle and the sum of the amorphous Al₂O₃ and SiO₂ was more significant than between the plasticity angle and the sum of the amorphous Al₂O₃, SiO₂, and Fe₂O₃ (r² = 0.88** and 0.76**, respectively). The Atterberg limits of the soil were not directly correlated with the percentage of amorphous constituents.
