A review of the effects of antibiotics on the anaerobic digestion of swine waste

Antibiotics are frequently detected in swine waste. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective way to treat animal wastes containing antibiotics, which in turn have side effects on the AD process. Typically, antibiotics inhibit biogas/methane production when present at high concentrations yet, under certain conditions, promote AD performance. Furthermore, the physiological activities of microbes, especially methanogens, are negatively influenced by antibiotics, which in turn affects AD performance. Here, potential sustainable techniques for the biodegradation of antibiotics in swine waste were proposed; meanwhile, current challenges and counter-measures including pretreatment, inoculum acclimation, and the development of new AD-related technologies were suggested.
