A study of 490 geriatric patients, many having non-gastrointestinal problems revealed that 55 were malnourished. Of these, 24 had previously undiagnosed malabsorption, 17 of which had a bacterial infection of the small bowel. Infection was confirmed in 10 of the patients by intestinal fluid cultures. Malnutrition in the remaining 31 of the 55 malnourished patients was attributed to dietary factors, Additional clinical observations are reported and discussed. The results of this study indicate that small bowel bacterial infection can be a potential cause of occult malabsorption in the elderly. (wz)
