Response of sowing dates and cultivars against soybean anthracnose

Anthracnose/pod blight (Colletotrichum truncatum) of soybean is one of the major disease causing considerable quantitative and qualitative losses in the crop. Adjustment of sowing time is one of the best strategy for avoiding/reducing the disease incidence and severity. Results of the field experiment conducted during Kharif, 2006 revealed that sowing dates and soybean cultivars significantly influenced the percentage foliage anthracnose, correspondence defoliation and pod blight and thereby affected the seed yield and test weight. However, least mean foliage anthracnose (9.10-10.73%), corresponding defoliation (18.01-23.47%) and pod blight (6.43- 14.09%) with highest grain yield (24.92-29.85 kg/ha) and test weight (13.50-15.66 g) were recorded in the crop sown on 25th July. The crop sown on 25th June recorded increased intensity of mean foliage anthracnose (20.36- 26.07%), correspondence defoliation (28.40-36.83%) and pod blight (10.98-22.48%). Among the soybean cultivars, Cv. MAUS-71 exhibited reduced intensity of foliage anthracnose (8.33- 20.36, defoliation (8.95-12.29%) and pod blight (6.43-11.10 %) with increased grain yield (14.33-29.85 kg/ha) and test weight (13.66-15.66 g). This was followed by the cultivars MAUS-81, JS-335 and MAUS-61. The interaction effect of sowing dates × cultivars in respect of percentage intensity of foliage anthracnose, pod blight and corresponding defoliation and grain yield and test weight were found significant.
