The influence of plant polyphenols from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) leaf extract on fermentation characteristics, biohydrogenation of C18 PUFA, and microbial populations in rumen of goats: in vitro study

Oil palm leaf is rich source of secondary metabolites. An in vitro study was conducted to identify the effects of oil palm leaf extract (OPLE) on rumen characteristics of goats by adding 0% (CON), 2.5% (T1), 5% (T2), and 10% (T3)/250 mg DM in 30 mL of buffered rumen fluid for 24 h. Methane gas production (mL/g DM) decreased (P < .05) with increasing levels of OPLE. Acetic to propionic acid ratio was lower (P < .05) in T3 (2.46) compared to the CON (3.12). Real-time PCR analyses indicated that the populations of total methanogens and Methanobacteriaceae in OPLE treatment groups decreased (P < .05) compared to CON, without any significant changes in the population of cellulolytic bacteria. Supplementation of the diet with OPLE significantly (P < .05) decreased the concentration of C18:0 while increased (P < .05) the concentration of C18:1 t-11 and c-9, t-11 CLA after 24 h of incubation.
