High yields have frequently been reported for crops, particularly vegetables grown under greenhouses with hydroponic systems. However, in the literature on bean, corresponding yields from a well-prepared soil are not provided. The objective of the present work was to determine grain yield and yield components, and biomass and its partition for bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in a hydroponic system and in well-prepared soil. Bush bean (Type I) variety Cacahuate-72 was planted in a greenhouse with a density equivalent to 60 plants.m(-2) in plastic containers with a capacity of 50 L. For the hydroponic system, a complete Steiner solution modified for the vegetative and reproductive phase, and a Perlite substrate were employed. For the soil culture, a soil rich in organic matter mixed with sand in a 2:1 ratio was employed. Chemical fertilizers were added and watering was provided. The design of the experiment was completely randomized with five replications. Compared to the hydroponic system, the soil culture produced a significant 16 percent lower biomass and a grain yield of 605 g m(-2) (13 percent less than that of the hydroponic system). This response was due to a lower dry matter accumulation in root, stem, branches, and leaf lamina and to a lower number of normal pods.
