Intakes of vitamins and minerals by pregnant women with selected clinical symptoms

The diets of a selected group of young pregnant women with toxemia were evaluated for their content of vitamins and minerals to determine possible correlations between nutrient intake and pregnancy complications. Food samples were analyzed based on dietary histories collected in 3 trials over 3 successive years. Results indicated that toxemia in pregnancy is characterized by hypertension, edema, and/or proteinuria. When compared to controls, the toxemic group had lower intakes of vitamins and minerals, but both groups were deficient in calcium, magnesium, vitamins B6 and 12, and thiamin. Anemia was not related to the incidence of toxemia. Meat, milk and grains provided significant proportions of the nutrients ingested except vitamin A.
