Production potentials and quality characters of different desi cotton varieties under high density planting system in scarce rainfall zone of Andhra Pradesh

Investigation of new cotton production strategies is needed to enhance the productivity and profitability. A field experiment was conducted in clay textured soil during Kharif season of 2016–17 to evaluate the different desi varieties under High Density Planting System (HDPS) on yield and quality at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh. The experiment was laid out in Randomized block design consisting of 13 desi varieties viz; PA-255, PA-08, PA-528, PA-760, PA-402, Roja, CISA6–2, CISA6–256, Phule Dhanwantri, GCot 15, TKA-9102/3, DLSA-17 and Yaganti with spacing of 60 cm x10 cm under rainfed conditions. Among all the varieties Phule Dhanwantri recorded higher plant height (201cm), sympodia (20.7), number of bolls/square meter(36.3), boll weight(3.08), seed cotton yield (1278 kg ha⁻¹) and lint yield (430 kg ha⁻¹) compared to other genotypes. Lower number of bolls/square meter (11.0), seed cotton yield(456 kg ha⁻¹) and lint yield(131 kg ha⁻¹) were recorded with PA-528. Quality parameters like staple length, uniformity index, micro naire value, strength and elongation were not altered due to desi cotton varieties cultivated under HDPS.
