Asparagus cultivation in Japan, focusing on Hiroshima
2002
Kohmura, H.
Asparagus cultivation in Japan had started since 1923 and as the crop for cold district the area has gradually expanded. Recently, as the crop for conversion of paddy rice the area also has been increasing in warm district. Japan is situated in temperate monsoon zone and asparagus ferns are crowded together at the time of cultivation especially in warm district. Thus the modified mother stalks cultivation methods was developed in Hiroshima prefecture and used in both of open field and greenhouse cultivation. The system of cultural control of stem blight disease was also developed and the devastating damage seen is now avoided. Moreover, polyploidy and cloned asparagus breeding were developed to improve cultivation conditions. At present, we have been trying to develop the new variety that would fill the domestic market needs.
