Tannin and growth variation of a sericea lespedeza clone in relation to soil type

A single clone of sericea lespedeza was grown on several soil types in the same latitude in the field and in pots containing the different types of soil. The tannin content of the leaves was found to vary significantly with soil type and between cuttings made at different dates of a season on the same soil. The number of shoots per plant, height, leafiness, dry matter, and yield varied with soil type and time of cutting. The variation of these morphological characters and seasonal weather conditions was not to any extent associated with the tannin content of the leaves. A large part of the variation in tannin was due to soil differences, in both field and pot experiments. In the pot experiments variation in light caused considerable tannin variation.
